Kinesthesia

Kinesthesia– the sensation of movement in space- detects weight and body movement

How to assess Kinesthesia

– While holding the lateral part of the upper extremity move the joint into flexion and extension

-Ask the client to close their eyes

– Passively move upper extremity into flexion and extension. Ask the client to identify the movement while in motion.

  1. Explain test purpose and procedures
-”Sometimes when a person has an injury such as yours they way they feel things can be affected. I am going to test how you feel your body while in motion.”
  2. Explain stimulus and expected response while OT demonstrates movement on self
    – “This movement is flexion and this movement is extension.”
  3. Demonstrate on client less involved side
    – “While your arm is moving like this it is flexion. While your arm is moving like this it is extension.”
  4. Test clients less involved side with eyes closed
-”Close your eyes. Is the movement of your arm flexion or extension?”
  5. Test clients more involved side with eyes closed
-”Keep your eyes closed and we are going to do the same thing on the other side.”
