Proprioception

Proprioception: knowing the position of your body/limbs in space when at rest
How to test Proprioception
-Holding the lateral portion of the clients UE move the joint into flexion and extension
-Ask client to close eyes
-Place upper extension in flexion and extension
-Ask client to identify if the upper extremity is flexed or extended position after the movement has taken place and the UE is at rest
  1. Explain test purpose and procedures
-”Sometimes when a person has an injury such as yours they way they feel things can be affected. I am going to test how you feel your position while at rest.”
  2. Explain stimulus and expected response while OT demonstrates movement on self
    – “This position is flexion and this position is extension.”
  3. Demonstrate on client less involved side
    – “While your arm is positioned like this it is flexion. While your arm is positioned like this it is extension.”
  4. Test clients less involved side with eyes closed
-”Close your eyes. Is the position of your arm flexion or extension?”
  5. Test clients more involved side with eyes closed
-”Keep your eyes closed and we are going to do the same thing on the other side.”
