MMT

Manual Muscle Testing

  • ROM is assessed before MMT
  • Strength is a major component of MMT
  • MMT measures the maximal contraction of a muscle or muscle group

Grading MMT

Normal (N)  5
Good    (G)  4
Fair      (F)  3
Poor     (P)  2
Trace    (T)  1
Zero     (0)  0
MMT Technique Guidlines (Break Test)
  • Perform ROM first
  • Explain procedure to patient
  • Demonstrate each movement
  • Position limb to be tested AGAINST GRAVITY
  • Have patient move through full AROM
  • Have patient repeat movement
  • Stabilize proximally
  • Palpate muscle group
  • Apply resistance distally

Resistance- should be applied to the distal end of the segment into which muscle inserts in the direction the movement came from; initially light resistance & increase to maximal resistance over 2-3 seconds

Administering the Break Test

1. “I’d like to take a look at how strong your arms are.  I’m going to ask you to move your arm in different directions & then, I will ask you to hold it as tight as you can while I give you some resistance…If you have any discomfort during the process, please be sure to let me know & we will stop.”

2. “Can you move your arm up toward the ceiling like this?”

[OBSERVE]

If they can, then you already know they’re normal, good or fair and bring back to 90

3. “OK, please do the same movement again.”

[STABILIZE PROXIMALLY & PALPATE]

4. “Good – now, hold your arm in this position & don’t let me push it down.”

[APPLY RESIST DISTALLY – IN DIRECTION

MVMT. CAME FROM – LIGHT AT FIRST &

INCREASE TO MAX]
