Shoulder Flexion: 0-180 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Axis of goniometer 1″ below acromion process
  • Start with arms hanging down at side
  • Movable arm along humerus
  • Fixed arm pointed at floor
  • Have individual keep arm strait and raise forward and overhead as high as possible
  • Fixed arm stays in place, movable arm moves with humerus
Shoulder flexion

Shoulder Extension: 0-60 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Axis of goniometer 1″ below acromion process
  • Start with arms hanging at side
  • Movable arm along humerus
  • Fixed arm pointed at floor
  • Have individual keep arm strait and extend as far back as possible
  • Fixed arm stays pointed to floor, movable arm moves with humerus
Shoulder extension

Shoulder Abduction: 0-180 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Measure from behind to avoid breast tissue
  • Axis of goniometer on posterior Glenohumeral Joint
  • Movable arm along lateral humerus
  • Fixed arm pointed at floor
  • Have individual abduct arm to side of body as high as allowed with palms facing forward
  • Fixed arm stays pointed to floor, movable arm moves with lateral humerus
Shoulder abduction

Shoulder Internal Rotation: 0-70 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Humerus parallel to floor, arm bent at 90 degree angle
  • Axis of goniometer on Olectronon Process
  • Fixed arm pointed at floor
  • Movable arm along ulna
  • Have individual keep humerus parallel to floor as they rotate forearm down to floor
  • Fixed arm stays pointed to floor and movable arm moves with ulna
  • Can be done in gun slinger position for gravity eliminated
Shoulder internal rotation

Shoulder External Rotation: 0-90 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Humerus parallel to floor, arm bent at 90 degree angle
  • Axis of goniometer on Olectronon Process
  • Fixed arm pointed at floor
  • Movable arm along ulna
  • Have individual keep humerus parallel to floor as they rotate forearm towards ceiling
  • Fixed arm stays pointed to floor and movable arm moves with ulna
  • Can be done in gun slinger position for gravity eliminated
Shoulder external rotation

Shoulder Horizontal Abduction: 0-90 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Arm strait out in front at a 90 degree angle to the body
  • Axis of goniometer on top of acromion process
  • Fixed arm pointed at 90 degree angle to body
  • Movable arm on top of humerus
  • Have individual keep arm strait as they move it parallel to floor to abduct from the body
  • Fixed arm stays pointed forward as movable arm travels with humerus
  • Can be done on top of table for gravity eliminated
Horizontal abduction

Shoulder Horizontal Adduction: 0-45 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Arm strait out at side, parallel to body
  • Axis of goniometer on top of acromion process
  • Fixed arm pointed out from body
  • Movable arm on top of humerus
  • Have individual keep arm strait as they move it parallel to floor to adduct from the body
  • Fixed arm stays pointed out as movable arm travels with humerus
  • Can be done on top of table for gravity eliminated
Horizontal adduction

Elbow Flexion: 0-150 degrees

  • Use 12″ Goniometer
  • Sitting in chair, feet on floor, good posture
  • Arm hanging to side of body
  • Axis of goniometer on lateral epicondyle
  • Fixed arm on humerus
  • Movable arm on radius
  • Have individual flex arm keeping fixed arm on humerus and movable arm moves with radius
Elbow flexion

Wrist Extension: 0-70 degrees

  • Hand palm down on table
  • In line with 3rd metacarpal
  • Axis on wrist
  • Extend wrist up with palm down as high as possible and take measurement
  • Can be done with wrist hanging off table for gravity eliminated
Wrist extension

Wrist Flexion: 0-80 degrees

  •  Hand palm up on table
  • In line with 3rd metacarpal
  • Axis on wrist
  • Flex wrist up as high as possible and take measurement
  • Can be done with wrist hanging off table for gravity eliminated
Wrist flexion

Supination: 0-80 degrees

  • Use 8″ goniometer
  • Start in gun slinger position
  • Hold pencil in fist
  • Place axis on 3rd PIP
  • Supinate hand and take measurement
Supination

Pronation: 0-80 degrees

  • Use 8″ goniometer
  • Start in gun slinger position
  • Hold pencil in fist
  • Place axis on 3rd PIP
  • Pronate hand and take measurement
Pronation
