Students will randomly select two (2) ROM & two (2) MMT to perform. Students are being tested on technique vs. interpretation of findings.

Station A: Range of Motion

1. The ROM portion is worth a total of 12 points (6 for each movement) & is graded as follows:

a. JOINT/MOTION (2 points)
* identifies correct joint (1 point)
* identifies correct motion (1 point)

b. GONIOMETRY (4 points)
* axis of goniometer on axis of jt motion & not digging into skin (1 point)
* arms of goniometer aligned & adjusted prn (2 points)
* reads goniometer correctly (1 point)

Station B: Manual Muscle Testing

1. The MMT portion is worth a total of 12 points (6 for each movement) & is graded as follows:

a. JOINT/POSITION (2 points)

* identifies the proper joint & checks for full AROM first (1 point)
* positions examiner in against gravity position (exceptions: forearm
supination/pronation, wrist ulnar deviation, digits) (1 point)

b. HAND PLACEMENT/PALPATION/RESISTANCE (4 points)

* places one hand proximal to joint & palpates muscle (2 points)
* uses adequate resistance at mid-range of motion with hand placed at
distal end of moveable part (2 points)

Station C: Reflexes

Students will randomly select two reflexes.

1. The reflex portion is worth a total of 10 points (5 for each reflex) & is graded as follows:

a. identifies testing position (2 points)
b. applies stimulus (2 points)
c. determines whether the response to the stimulus is “positive” or “negative” (1 point)

Station D: Coordination

Students will administer the 9-hole peg test.

1. The coordination portion is worth 5 points & is graded as follows:

a. STANDARDIZED INSTRUCTIONS (2 points)
* sets test equipment up properly (1 point)
* verbally instructs examiner using the standardized instructions (1 point)

b. PROPER PROCEDURES (2 points)
* starts with dominant extremity, completes trial & actual test (1 point)
* starts/stops watch at appropriate time (1 point)

c. SCORING
* uses norms (provided) to determine examiner’s performance (1 point)

Station E: Sensibility

Students will randomly select two sensibility tests to perform. Students are being tested on technique vs. interpretation of findings.

1. The sensibility portion is worth 14 points (7 for each test) & is graded as follows:

a. PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES (4 points)

* Explanation: the student explains what he/she is about to do, in layman’s terms.
Explanation should describe the purpose & technique (1 point)

* Demonstration on self: the student briefly demonstrates the test on his/her own
hand (1 point)

* Demonstration/test on examiner’s uninvolved side: the student does a brief
demonstration on the examiner’s uninvolved extremity & then occludes the examiner’s vision & begins the test on the uninvolved extremity (1 point)

* Test: student occludes examiner’s vision & conducts test on examiner’s
involved side (1 point)

b. TECHNIQUE (4 points)

* Light Touch (not localized): random location, cover volar/dorsal aspects (“say yes when you feel it”)
* Light Touch (localized): random location, cover volar/dorsal aspects (“tell me/show me where I touched you”)
* Deep Pressure: uses adequate pressure to blanch skin, random location (“say yes when you feel it”)
* Sharp/Dull: random order, random location, random speed (“tell me if you feel sharp or dull”)
* Hot/Cold: random order, random location, contacts skin for at least 1 full second (“tell me if you feel hot or cold”)
Station F: Vision

1. Students will assess distant and near visual acuity. The vision acuity section is worth 8 points (4 for each assessment). Entire Vision portion of practical is worth 8 points.

a. Distant Va
* Sets up environment appropriately & positions examiner properly in relation to visual testing prompt (2 points)
* Assess without & with correction (1 point)
* Provides instructions in layman’s terminology (1 point)
* Accurately determines Va score (1 point)

b. Near Va
* Sets up environment appropriately & positions examiner properly in relation to visual testing prompt (2 points)
* Assess without & with correction (1 point)
* Provides instructions in layman’s terminology (1 point)
* Accurately determines Va score (1 point)
Station G: Grip & Pinch Strength

* demonstrates proper position for testing grip/pinch strength(1 point)
* uses proper protocol and scoring (assess both hands; average of 3 trials) (2 points)
* properly identifies age related norm and persons score in relation to norms (2 points)
